St. Basil's Day - 01/01/09

On Thursday, January 1st members of our parish community gathered to celebrate the feast of our Lord's Circumcision, St. Basil's Day, as well as the civil New Year. At the conclusion of the service the Vasilopita (St. Basils Bread) was blessed and then distributed at the coffee hour. The Vasilopita originated during the life-time of St. Basil, when he had women bake gold coins into sweet bread and then distribute them to the poor. This year parishioner Evelyn Onufer and guest Chet Lubecki received the blessing of the coin in their piece of bread! The tradition is a reminder of the necessity of outreach and care for the poor in the Christian life. May God bless us with everything that is necessary for our salvation in this New Year!
