Christmas Eve - 12/24/2012

On Monday, December 24th the community of Christ the Saviour gathered to celebrated Great Compline and Matins of the Great Feast of our Lord's Nativity. The following morning, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated. Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

Today heaven and earth are united, for Christ is born.
Today God has come to earth, and man ascends to heaven.
Today God, Who by nature cannot be seen,
is seen in the flesh for our sake.
Let us glorify Him, crying:
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace!
Thy coming has brought peace to us.
Glory to Thee, O our Savior!”

- Litya Hymn at Great Compline of Nativity

Advent Activities at Christ The Saviour - 12/16/2012

On Sunday, December 16th the faithful of Christ the Saviour (Harrisburg) welcomed Deacon Matthew, M. Elizabeth, Elias (6), and Genevieve (3) Brown. The Browns are in the third year at St. Tikhon Seminary, and were selected as our "FOCA Sponsor a Seminary Family for Christmas" recipients (they are also the recipients of our half tuition scholarship). Over the past few weeks our parish organizations have shown their love and support for our "adopted family" by fulfilling their Christmas wish-list. Deacon Matthew served with our parish clergy and offered an inspiring homily on how we are to respond to our Lord's invitation to care for those in need, especially those who we find it "difficult" to love. We look forward to welcoming the whole family back in the spring.

Following the Divine Liturgy our Sunday School teachers and children treated a packed-house to a Nativity talent showcase. Acts included instrumental, singing, dance, and skits. It was a blessing to see all of the talent our children and young adults have been gifted with being used for the glory of God! Each performance also prepared us for the upcoming feast of our Lord's Nativity. At the conclusion we were visited by St. Nicholas, who distributed gold coins to all the performers.

The time of our salvation draws near. Prepare, O cave! The Virgin draws near to bear the Christ. Be glad, and rejoice, O Bethlehem, land of Judah, for our Lord has come from you! Hearken, O mountains and hills, and lands around Judea, for Christ, the Lover of mankind, is coming to save those whom He created! (Hymn of the Forefeast by Cyprian)

CTS Teen Group Helps In NJ Relief Effort - 12/08/2012

On Saturday, December 8th the Christ the Saviour Teen Group (Junior O Club), traveled to New Jersey to participate in Hurricane Sandy Relief. The group began their preparations over a month ago, serving a meal at fellowship in order to raise the needed funds. They were also assisted by our parish faithful who donated over 50 boxes of clothing, 40 pairs of shoes, as well as formula and diapers over the past month. Over the past month teens and their advisers sorted the clothes, and packaged them for their eventual distribution.

The mission trip began at 7am Saturday morning with prayers in the church, after which we headed toward our destination. Once we arrived in NJ our teens and their advisers assisted a local relief effort at the Church of Grace and Peace in Toms River. Activities included assisting in maintenance projects, sorting and carrying supplies, as well as assisting locals who came to take advantage of the ministry.

We went to a local restaurant for lunch, then went to another location where we unloaded much of the donated clothing items from our parish. The trip concluded with a visit to the Orthodox Christian Church of the Annunciation (http://holy-annunciation-church.org/) in Brick, NJ. Father Gary Breton greeted us, and gave a history of the parish, and spoke of its recently completed iconography project. Following a moleiben of Thanksgiving and prayers for safe travels we journeyed home, giving glory to God for a blessed day, and a successful mission trip.

Annual Vehicle Blessing - 07/22/2012

On Sunday, July 22nd, the community at Christ the Saviour celebrated their annual vehicle blessing following the Divine Liturgy. We were honored to welcome Fr. Innokenty, a hieromonk from St. Tikhon Monastery. This annual event is a reminder to each of us to ask God's blessing upon every aspect of our lives; it is also a reminder that we must in turn use these gifts for His glory and the furthering of His Kingdom!

Prayer at the Blessing of Vehicles:  O Lord our God, Who dost ride upon the Cherubim; Who walks on the wings of the wind; Who didst sent Thy  servant the Prophet Elijah a chariot of fire, and Who with Thine All-Holy Spirit has inspired and guided the human mind to invent various and expedient means of transportation and travel: We give Thee thanks, O Master, for Thou has provided us, Thy servants, with these vehicles to serve our different needs. Pour out Thy heavenly blessing upon each of these vehicles and other forms of transportation; grant each of them a Guardian Angel, that they may be preserved against all evil and protected from all harm; guide them upon the right path, and always keep the drivers and passengers in safety.

Through the intercessions of our Most-pure Lady, the Theotokos, and ever-virgin Mary; through the might and power of the precious and life-giving Cross; Through the protection of the Heavenly Bodiless powers of Heaven, and among them the Archangel Raphael; Through the prayers of our father among the saints, Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, patron of travelers, of the Great Martyr Christopher, and of the Holy and glorious Prophet Elijah, in whose memory we celebrate this blessing, and of all Thy saints.

For Thou art the Provider and Sanctifier of all  things O our God, and unto Thee do we send up glory, together with Thine Only begotten Son, and Thine All-holy, good and Life-creating Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen!

Good Friday Matins and Lamentatioins - 04/13/2012

Isaiah saw the never-setting light of Thy  compassionate manifestation to us as God, O  Christ. Rising early from the night he cried: “The dead shall arise. Those in the tombs shall awake. All those on earth shall greatly rejoice.” Canon Ode 5

Through death Thou dost transform what is mortal, and through burial Thou dost  transform what is corruptible; for in a manner befitting God Thou dost make incorrupt and  immortal the nature which Thou hast assumed, since Thy flesh did not see corruption, and in a wondrous manner Thy soul was not abandoned in hell. Canon Ode 5: Troparion

Good Friday Burial Vespers - 04/13/2012

Joseph together with Nicodemus took Thee down from the Tree, who clothest  Thyself with light as with a garment. He gazed on Thy Body, dead, naked and unburied, and in grief and tender compassion he lamented:  “Woe is me, my sweetest Jesus! A short while ago, the sun beheld Thee hanging on the Cross and it hid itself in darkness. The earth quaked in fear at the sight. The veil of the temple was torn in two. Lo, now I see Thee willingly submit to death for our sake. How shall I bury Thee, O my God? How can I wrap Thee in a shroud? How can I touch Thy most pure body with my hands? What songs can I sing for Thy exodus, O compassionate one? I magnify Thy Passion. I glorify Thy Burial and Thy Holy Resurrection, crying: ‘O Lord, Glory to Thee!’” Aposticha Doxastichon

Holy Thursday Passion Gospels - 04/12/2012

"Today is hung upon the Tree, He Who did hang the land in the midst of the waters. A Crown of thorns crowns Him Who is King of Angels. He is wrapped about with the purple of mockery Who wrapped the Heavens with clouds. He received buffetings Who freed Adam in Jordan. He was transfixed with nails Who is the Bridegroom of the Church. He was pierced with a spear Who is the Son of the Virgin. We worship Thy Passion, O Christ. Show also unto us thy glorious Resurrection." XV Antiphon

Over 100 faithful gathered for the reading of seven epistles, Gospels, and prayers of intercession, repentance and healing. We are thankful to God for this opportunity to gather together - reminding us of the 133rd Psalm which proclaims:

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,

Running down on the beard,
The beard of Aaron,
Running down on the edge of his garments.

Triumph of Orthodoxy - 03/04/2012

On Sunday, March 4th our parish celebrated the Triumph of Orthodoxy along with faithful Orthodox Christians throughout the world. As part of our celebration this day, our children participated in a procession with icons within the church, and the entire congregation read the Synodikon of Orthodoxy, which proclaims:

"As the prophets beheld as the Apostles have taught, as the Church has received as the teachers have dogmatized, as the Universe has agreed, as Grace has shown forth, as Truth has revealed as falsehood has been dissolved, as Wisdom has presented; as Christ has Awarded. Thus we declare, thus we assert, thus we preach Christ our true God; and honor His Saints in words, in writings, in thoughts, in sacrifices, in churches, in Holy Icons. On the one hand worshipping and reverencing Christ as God and Lord, and on the other hand honoring as true servants of the same Lord of all and accordingly offering them veneration."

This is the Faith of the Apostles!

This is the Faith of the Fathers!

Chior Workshop - 03/03/2012

At the conclusion of the first week of Great Lent our parish celebrated the memory of St. Theodore the Recruit, whose heavenly appearance preserved the Christians of Constantinople from eating food in the market place that had been defiled by the apostate emperor Julian (361-363 AD). St. Theodore instructed the Archbishop to have the Christians prepare boiled wheat, and this would sustain them until the food was replenished the following week. In honor of this miraculous appearance, it is customary to prepare boiled what called Koliva or Kutya. We were also blessed by the presence of Fr. Timothy Hojnicki from Holy Apostles Mission, who preached a wonderful homily.

Following the service and fellowship, our choir members participated in an all-day workshop with Khouria Olga Atty from St. Tikhon Seminary. Choir members worked on various techniques and heard an inspiring lecture about the awesome ministry of church singing. May God bless Kh. Olga in her ministry to the Church, and may He continue to bless M. Theodora and our choir members in their ministry to our parish.
